OUR STORY

The name KESMAC is a combination of KESälahti and MAChine. Eero Tiainen founded the company in 1993, during one of the worst periods of Finland's economy. He came up with the idea while on sabbatical. Despite his former employer going bankrupt, Tiainen was undaunted and decided to bring new technologies to the Finnish mechanical engineering industry.

The location in Kesälahti was a happy coincidence. The community center had just become vacant, and Eero Tiainen offered the mayor a swap. The municipality received a plot of land on an island that belonged to him and gave him the hall in return. At the time, he had only a single laser cutter, but he had a lot of courage and confidence in new technology. Laser cutting was still unknown in Finland, and KESMAC was the first company in North Karelia to use this technology.

Interest in this innovation slowly grew among customers, and within a year, KESMAC had already hired four people. A few years later, the company moved to a larger facility, expanding its floor KESMAC significantly. Production expanded beyond cutting to include edging, machining, drilling, and painting. Eero Tiainen and his growing team successfully implemented CNC technology. This technology allows all machines to operate automatically and precisely, making production particularly efficient and accurate.

In 2003, ten years after its founding, KESMAC was named Company of the year in North Karelia, a tremendous honor. Three years later, in 2005, KESMAC built another production facility in Kitee, just 35 kilometers away. It began operations in 2008. This facility is primarily used for heavy machining, welding, and assembly of large parts.

There is a separate hall available for assembling large parts. Cutting, machining, and other preparatory work on the parts takes place in Kesälahti. In 2019, KESMAC employed 28 people.

The company places strong emphasis on cooperation and collaboration with local and regional partners, as well as shared responsibility. For example, in 2022, a large number of birdhouses were built by volunteers. A local company donated the lumber, Eero Tiainen was responsible for woodworking, and representatives from hunting clubs carried out the finishing work as partners.

To celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2023, KESMAC donated 30 wood-burning stoves to Ukraine. Eero Tiainen delivered them himself. In April 2024, an additional 54 stoves were built and delivered to Ukraine. Aid deliveries continued in 2025.

The ability to serve multiple target groups has not only allowed the company to grow but also prepared it for the future. Today, KESMAC is built on four pillars: the process industry, the pulp and paper industry, the mining industry, the forestry industry, and its own products.

Since 1993, the founder of KESMAC has relied on state-of-the-art technology, but remains convinced that the human factor and mutual trust are irreplaceable. Customers are treated as valued partners on an equal footing. The real recipe for success comes from combining humanity, CNC control, and digitalization, based on trust and cooperation

Outside of work, Eero Tiainen is a passionate angler and hunter. "Nature is a great counterbalance to entrepreneurship and helps me cope with the stresses and strains of everyday life," he explains. The eastern Finnish landscape of North Karelia, with its hills, forests, and crystal-clear lakes, offers the best opportunities for this.
